Full text: 29: The Operational Circulation Model of BSH (BSHcmod)

6 Prospects
It has been confirmed in the comparison of model results with measurements that
progress has been made in the prediction of various hydrodynamic parameters during
the past years. However, also some remaining problems have been identified.
Therefore, efforts will have to be made in different fields. To achieve a better
representation of small scale features, grid resolution has to be further increased but
there also is a need for the improvement of model physics and numerics. New turbulence
schemes have to be developed for a better representation of fronts, eddies, and
stratification. Modelling of sea ice will also be a subject of further research. Future
progress is also to be expected in the coupling of wave and circulation models.
National and international co-operation is crucially important for model improvement. An
exchange of measurements and model results (e.g. forcing data) may provide new
approaches to an improvement of model forecasts. The role of data assimilation in
operational shelf modelling may become more important in future. According to Prandle
(2000) and Flather (2000), better communication and (international) collaboration will be
the key to future developments. In this context, the Internet is a very useful instrument
which will be growing in importance.
