düng in der Nordsee von Norwegen in die Nieder 
lande erteilte das BSH die erforderliche Geneh 
migung. Außerdem wurde die Verlegung von 
5 Telekommunikationskabeln in Nord- und Ost 
see und der Betrieb eines Kabels in der Ostsee 
zugelassen. Im Zusammenhang mit der Planung 
von Offshore-Windenergieanlagen wurden 9 Vor 
anfragen bearbeitet. 
Veranstaltungen zu meeresbezogenen The 
men spielten für das BSH im Internationalen Jahr 
des Ozeans eine herausgehobene Rolle. In Zu 
sammenarbeit mit dem Umweltbundesamt wur 
de zum achten Mal das Symposium „Aktuelle 
Probleme der Meeresumwelt“ durchgeführt. Vor 
mehr als 250 Experten stellte Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer 
als Direktor des Umweltprogramms der Vereinten 
Nationen die Aktivitäten der UN zum Schutz der 
Meere vor. Das BSH organisierte das 10. Fach 
gespräch über Umweltradioaktivität, an dem 220 
Vertreter der in Deutschland mit Radioaktivitäts 
fragen befaßten Institutionen teilnahmen. Im Rah 
men des 29. Deutschen Seeschiffahrtstages in 
Rostock betreute das BSH einen Kongreß über 
Ostseeforschung für Schiffahrt und Umwelt. Beim 
6. Rostocker Gespräch zum Seerecht, mitveran 
staltet vom BSH, wurde das neue Seeschiffahrts 
anpassungsgesetz analysiert und bewertet. 
Am 21. Dezember wurde die Seewartme 
daille, die einzige maritime Auszeichnung der 
Bundesrepublik Deutschland, an den Schiffahrts 
publizisten Peter Tamm, den Arzt Dr. Kohfahl und 
die Eisbeobachterin Elvira Schmidt für besondere 
Verdienste um maritime Belange verliehen. 
Der Tag der offenen Tür wurde von der Be 
völkerung genutzt, sich über die Arbeiten des 
BSH zu informieren. 
(Current Problems of the Marine Environment) 
was held for the 8th time. Prof. Dr. Klaus Tôpfer, 
director of the United Nations Environment Pro 
gramme, presented the UN activities for the pro 
tection of the oceans to an audience of over 250 
experts. The BSH organized the 10th meeting on 
ambient radioactivity, which was attended by 220 
participants from German institutions dealing with 
questions of radioactivity. Within the framework 
of the 29th German Maritime Shipping Day in Ro 
stock, the BSH was in charge of a congress on 
Baltic research under environmental and shipping 
aspects. During the 6th Rostock Talks on the Law 
of the Sea, which was co-organized by the BSH, 
the novel Seeschiffahrtsanpassungsgesetz (Act 
for the adjustment of the technical and fiscal con 
ditions in shipping to international standards) was 
analyzed and evaluated. 
On 21 December, the maritime publisher 
Peter Tamm, the physician Dr. Kohfahl, and the ice 
observer Mrs Elvira Schmidt received the “See- 
wartmedaille” - Germany's only maritime award - 
to honour their merits in the maritime field. 
An Open Day gave the public an opportunity 
to take a look at the BSH’s range of activities. 
During 16 cruises in the Baltic, North Sea, 
and North Atlantic as far as Halifax, RV GauB per 
formed oceanographic, chemical, and geological 
investigations and measurements. Also radio na 
vigation system types and oceanographic equip 
ment were tested during the cruises. 
The BSH’s new vessel Komet, which replaces 
the almost 30-year-old former vessel under the 
same name, was commissioned on 4 December. 
She is the world’s most modern survey vessel.
