AKTIVITÄTEN 1998 
Kurzfassung 
1998 hatte als Internationales Jahr des 
Ozeans für das BSH besondere Bedeutung. Ziel 
dieses von den Vereinten Nationen proklamierten 
Jahres ist es gewesen, die Bedeutung der Meere 
hervorzuheben und weltweit das Meeresbewußt 
sein zu stärken. Als zentrale maritime Behörde 
hat das BSH neben eigenen Aktivitäten viele 
andere Vorhaben angeregt und koordiniert. Zu den 
insgesamt mehr als 100 Veranstaltungen und Er 
eignissen in Deutschland gehörten Vorträge, 
Kongresse, Ausstellungen, die Herausgabe einer 
Sonderbriefmarke, ein Schülerwettbewerb und an 
deres mehr. Mit vielen Beiträgen haben Presse, 
Rundfunk und Fernsehen das Anliegen gefördert. 
Die umfangreichen Arbeiten des BSH, geprägt von 
Dienstleistungen für die Schiffahrt, Untersuchungen 
und Maßnahmen zum Schutz der Meersumwelt so 
wie Beiträgen zur Verbesserung der Informationen 
über die Meere, erhielten durch das Internationale 
Jahr des Ozeans zusätzliches Gewicht. 
Eingebunden in das Schiffahrtsförderungs 
konzept der Bundesregierung hat das BSH 1998 
für 476 Schiffe unter deutscher Flagge Finanz 
beiträge von Insgesamt 39,35 Millionen DM (Vor 
jahr rd. 33 Millionen DM für 429 Schiffe) gewährt. 
Darin enthalten sind 5,2 Millionen DM für die 
Förderung von 284 zusätzlichen Arbeitsplätzen für 
deutsche und EU-Seeleute und 3,35 Millionen DM 
für die Förderung von 96 Ausbildungsplätzen auf 
deutschen Schiffen. 
Die weiter anhaltende Neubautätigkeit für 
Schiffe unter deutscher Flagge hatte zur Folge, 
daß für 441 Schiffe mit einer Gesamttonnage von

Summary 
1998, the International Year of the Ocean 
(IYO), was of particular importance to the Bun- 
desamt fur Seeschiffahrt und Hydrographle (BSH, 
Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency). The 
goal of the IYO, proclaimed by the United Nations, 
was to draw the attention of the public to the 
importance of the oceans. The BSH, as Ger 
many’s central maritime authority, initiated and 
co-ordinated numerous internal and external 
activities and projects relating to the IYO. A total 
of over 100 events were organized in Germany, 
including lectures, congresses, exhibitions, the 
issue of a special postal stamp and a students’ 
competition, among many others. The goals of 
the International Year of the Ocean were promot 
ed by press contributions and In TV/radio broad 
casts. The IYO highlighted the BSH’s large range 
of activities focusing on services to shipping, 
marine monitoring and measures to protect the 
marine environment, and to improve the know 
ledge of the seas. 
Within the framework of the Federal Govern 
ment’s programme for the promotion of merchant 
shipping, the BSH paid financial aid in the total 
amount of DM 39.35 million to 476 ships flying the 
German flag (1997: DM 33 million to 429 ships). 
This amount included DM 5.2 million to finance 
284 additional job positions for German and EU 
mariners, and DM 3.35 million to finance 96 train 
ing places on board German vessels.
