B 2 RADIOLOGICAL DATA (Kautsky)
B 2,1 Method
The investigations were carried out on unfilter-
ed water samples; that is, on water including particles.
With the exception of those samples which were worked«—-
off on board immediately after taking, all those sam-
ples which were kept in containers for storage, and
also those samples which had been put through an ion-
exchange column, were brought tö a value of about 2 pH
by the addition of hydrochloric acid,
All the samples taken in the year 1966 from dif-
ferent depths for radiological investigation, had a
uniform volume of 50 1, During the following years,
in order to accommodate to the decreasing concentra-
tion activity of !27cs with depth, different quanti-
ties of water (each according to the sampling depth)
were taken for the analyses. We took, from O0 to 100 m
depths —- 50 1; at 250 and 500 m —- each 100 1; from
750 to 1,250 m — each 200 1; at 1,500 m = 300 1; and
from 2,000 m downwards —- 400 1 each per sample. For
the sampling, we used a 50 1 sampler developed at our
Institute or a Gerard-Ewing sampler of 270 1 content,
which were very kindly placed at our disposal by the
Institut für Umweltphysik of Heidelberg University.
The 15768 in the 50 1 samples was determined
according to the method of Schmitt and Kautsky (1961).
At 100 1 samples onwards, we separated the 15708 over
Potassiumhexacyanocobaltate-(II)-Ferrate-(II) (KCFC)
as ion-exchanger. The subsequent working-off took
place in the manner described by Eicke (1974).
Blanks carried out with 60g KCFC (exchanger
amount for one analysis) gave an activity of up to
a maximum of 1 pCi 137605, In the case of a 100 1
water sample, that would be equivalent to an activity
