Jahresbericht Hr. 9/1954
D. Summary
GENERAL DEVELOPMENT' OE THE G.H.Ï. DÜRING 19'-4
In 1954, the Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut (G.H.I.) endeavoured
again to use the means at their disposal as adequately and as far as possible
for the benefit of shipping. The "Ausschuß des Seeverkehrs- Beirats für die
Angelegenheiten des Deutschen Hydrographischen Instituts" rendered valuable
assistance in reaching this aim. Preference was given to those questions which
concerned the chart and the navigation with the aid of Consol (cp. p. 12),
■ Work relating to the accomplishment of the Sailing Direction Work progress
ed, As a consequence of thé introduction of the international buoyage system,
an extensive description of the new characteristics was issued. With the 10
revised parts of the Lists of Lights the number of new editions could be
doubled as compared with the preceding year. The repeated request of shipping,
to issue all 13 parts of this list annually, could how be met and will be
complied with also in the future if the budgetary situation remains stable.
Rising demands for the "Nachrichten für Seefahrer" (N.t.M.) made an increase
in the number of copies printed necessary. The voluntary cooperation of
shipowners and of their ship's masters as well as of the official German re
presentations abroad in procuring information for the’ revision of nautical
publications has markedly grown. The German N.t.M. can be consulted in all
the official German representations established in foreign harbours.
With the setting up of the new chart group "Pacific and Indian Ocean" the
work of the Chart Establishment could be extended at least partly to areas
which could not be worked up as yet. With the exception Of charts to be used
by ships bound for the oil harbours of the Persian Gulf, which were commenced•
already before, the first charts covering parts of the Indian Ocean and of
the Pacific, which could not be continued since the World War It, will
appear about second half of 1955.
The introduction of the international buoyage system in coastal waters of
the "Deutsche Bundesrepublik" required extensive and timetaking work to be
carried out at 45 German charts. Consequently, in 1954 only 90 charts as
against 107 ones in the year before could be issued as "new edition". Of the
13 new charts (12 in the preceding year) issued above this, 4 cover areas of
oil harbours in the Persian Gulf. Further 8 charts of this region are being
prepared.already and will appear shortly.
The publication of large-scale Decca charts of the German coast, which
was started last year with D. 87, could be continued by the issue of the new
Decca charts No. 2 "Mündungen der Jade und Weser", N0. 84 "Die Westfriesi
schen Inseln", and N0. 138 "Elbemündung"-» although the German chain in 1954
