for amending charts will be issued as from October 1955 only one-coloured.
Due to thi's simplification the blocks can be issued much quicker and in
greater numbers which will prove beneficial .for the correction of charts.
The extended sphere of work of the Chart Establishment made necessary a
revision of the hitherto used ¥erzeicKnis der nautisehen harten und Bticher.,.
(last edition 1951). The new list, which appeared beginning of 1956, brings
many improvements, Amongst others, the loose index sheets have been replaced
by whole-page index charts to appear opposite the corresponding text-page.
For the use of. Deooa navigation, two charts were published with, the
Decca lattice of the German chain inserted in same (ep.p. 19). The production
of the new Consol lattice charts was. postponed.
The sales of charts with about 90 000 copies maintained approximately
the same figure as for 1.954.
Surveying work of the G.H.I. craft was limited in the year under review
to areas in the North Sea. Of the foreseen surveying tasks, the following i
could, be carried out: areas of the sea and wadden-sea between the Ostfriesi-
sche Inseln Juist and Waagerooga, except for the sea-region between Baltrum
and Spiekeroog; the Nordergriinde; inner and outer part of R.Elbe estuary;
.Ausseneider with Wesselburener loch; inner and outer part of the Héver and

fork, .appreciably progressed, due to, the long lasting fine weather situa
tion prevailing last summer and by using the Decca position, fixing system to
determine the ship's position in the outer parts of the tasks, via,: itorder-
gründé; B.Elbe estuary and Sever. Approximately 4 000 km more sounding lines
were run than in the preceding year. In the area of the Nordergründe, and
E.Elbe estuary positions were fixed for the first time with one hyperbola each
of the German and Danish Decca chain., in order to obtain more favourable .angles
of intersection of the De.cea hyperbolae and therewith a higher accuracy of
position fixing, than that if solely using the German Decca curves; it was wor
ked simultaneously with two Decca Navigator equipments.
Survey and research ship "Gauss" undertook, in addition to her surveying
activities, 8 research and trial cruises. With the exception of one cruise -
when hydrographic investigations were resumed in the southern North Sea to
gether with "Anton Dohrn" and "trthorn", commenced the years before - they
mainly served the continuation of investigations into the stability of propa
gation and position fixing of the Consol radio beacon Stavanger, the check of
propagation anomalies of the German Decca chain, experimental trials of naa-
tico-technical instruments and the implementation of type-testings of equip
ment for radio aids to navigation.
The two ■wreck-searching boat's worked preponderantly, on the official
■routes near the coasts, in the river estuaries and the surveying, areas.
