D. Summary
GEHEHAI DEVELOPMENT OE THE G.H.I. DURING 1955.
The report on the activities of the German Hydrographic Institute has
to start again from the same level which in its main features remained un
changed as far as personnel and monetary means are concerned. In the year
under review, therefore, the still growing amount of work to he carried out
could just he met hy increased intensification and further rationalization.
In its endeavours to further its work, the Institute was greatly
assisted consultatively hy members of the "Ausschuß des Seeverkehrsb.eirats
fur die Angelegenheiten des Deutschen Hydrographischen Instituts" (Committee
of the Sea Transport Advisory Council for the affairs of the G.H.I.)

Eurther efforts have been .exerted to fill the gaps which still existed
among the nautical publications. Thus 2 new editions of sailing directions
could appear, and 2 other hooks be given into the press, 5 books are being
revised. In addition 14 Pilots were brought up to date by publishing Supple
ments thereto. At the beginning of the year the second volume of .the "Hand
buch des Atlantischen Ozeans (Südatlantischer Ozean)" was issued; furthermore
- in cooperation with the Seewetteramt - a corrected reprint of the well-known
Monthly Pilot Charts for the South Atlantic Ocean was published. Eor the first
time all parts of the. Leuchtfeuerverzeichnis hitherto revised could be renewed
after one year’s run, The Nautische Eunkdienst has proved in its loose-leaf
form also in the year under review and its 4 volumes are currently renewed
by- supplements. The number of copies printed of the Nachrichten für Seefahrer
had to be increased to 2,600.
-The vivid voluntary cooperation of shipping companies and ship's masters,
again accorded in the past, had an invigorative and enriching effect on the
G.H.I. ’s nautical publications.
The Chart Establishment could now increase the number of sheets brought
up to /date to 711 charts - that are about two thirds of the entire chart work.
Nearly all gaps which still existed in European waters were filled. Up-to-date
editions of the major part of the ocean charts (having approximately a scale
of 1 : 250 000 to 1 : 1 Mill.) too, and part of the charts covering the coasts
of the.Gulf of Mexico and the Carribean Sea with the West Indies are now
available again to shipping. After that, in accordance with means and personnel,
as far as available, charts covering the American east coast will - at the
suggestion of the Seeverkehrsbeirat - Ausschuß für die Angelegenheiten des D.H.I.
