Jahresbericht Hr.11/1956
and autumn of the year under review. Simultaneous recordings of the true ship's
movements by means of gyro-instruments, especially "built for this purpose, are
to give information, on the relation between the observed compass errors and the
acceleration components measured in the fore-and-aft line and athvvartship direc
tion.
The methods to analyse empirically given oscillation curves, especially of
.the ship's oscillation curves, were extended by a statistical procedure of form
ing mean values, by calculation, and by a method permitting to examine two si
multaneously rècorded curves of two different quantities in respect to the mu
tually owned periodicities. Two gyro compass equipments were tested on board on
behalf of the Bundesmarine .■
Wort related to radio aids concerned above all the systematic studies of
the re-radiation conditions in the upper part of the medium frequency band (1,5-
3 Mc/s) for bearings aboard ship; further investigations into the stability
and operational characteristics of the Consol beacons in the Baltic, the North
Sea, the North-East Atlantic Ocean and in the Biscay; furthermore examinations
regarding efficiency Of the Doran fixes in the waters between Iceland and Greer, -
land, in the North Sea, and in the Biscay. Commercial instruments, i.e, 2 T
direction-finders, 2 Loran-equipments, and 1 radar-set, were type-tested
tical and technical respects.
Now as before the agencies of the Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut are
heavily occupied with the testing of instruments, compass adjustments and
supplying nautical information.
The exchange of thoughts "and experiences with the members of the Ausschuß
des Seeverkehrsbeirats für die Angelegenheiten des Deutschen Hydrographischen
Instituts touched again nearly all working fields of the Institute and advanced
even to new ground with a resolution relating to the supervision of the sea wa
ter as to radioactive substances. The Ausschuß was given opportunity to inspect
one of the German Decca transmitting stations and to hear from competent per
sons - Mr. Schwarz and Car. Powell from the Decca Company London - details re
lating to the further extension of this direction finding system. lectures and
discussions bearing on tides and tidal streams, on the atlas of tidal streams,
and on the edition of fishery charts resulted in numerous stimulations for fu
ture work to be done. The dictionary containing terms from the field of navi
gation by radio aids, compiled at the request of the Ausschuß, could be sub-

mitted on the occasion of its 12 meeting. This meeting was attended also by
a member of the Bundesmarine.
library and Archives continued to increase their volume - last not least
by intensifying the exchange which at present takes place between approximately
550 services (amongst them approximately 300 foreign ones).
The international relations of the Institute too experienced a gratifying
deepening by a vivid cooperation with the International Hydrographic Bureau in
Monaco, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea in Copenhagen
and with some bodies incorporated in the International Council for Scientific
Unions.
