by inclusion of two Norwegian ports, appeared as usual.
The Hamburger Sternwarte at Bergedorf placed most obligingly at the
disposal of the Time Service a 90 mm transit instrument for the duration of
the International Geophysical Year. The, instrument was set up and taken into
operation at the end of the year under review. In these circumstances it was .
possible for the own '77 mm transit instrument to undergo the necessary general
repair.
The manufacture of the single parts of the photographic zenith telescope
is finished. The mounting of the instrument in the workshop was commenced.
Two out of a total of sis precision quartz clocks built after the design
of the Bhysikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt were completed and put into
operation.
In cooperation with the Bundespost and the Bhysikalisch-Technische Bun
desanstalt permanent second-signals will be transmitted by night via the trans
mitter Mainflingen (77,5 kc/s). The quartz-controlled signal-giving devices
including current supply were completed.
The mechanical contacts of the devices transmitting the DHI time-signals
were replaced by electronic ones and a considerable increase in accuracy
reached thereby.
This year again the DHI cooperated with the Bhysikalisch-Technische Bun
desanstalt, the Fernmeldetechnische Zentralamt and the Hamburger Sternwarte
at Bergedorf by regularly exchanging quartz clock contacts, and the results
of astronomical' time determinations.
The chronometer testing service experienced another increase in the test

made for chronometers on hire.
The "Kleine Funkworterbuch", a dictionary contributing to the introduction
of uniform German special terms in the field of radio position fixing was pub

come any suggestion which will improy.e this booklet. At this place it may be
mentioned that the "Seewart" is highly dependent on the cooperation of the sea
faring mariners and that its editors will greatly appreciate any contribution.
In spite of the almost too many claims laid on the navigators on board, the
desire may be expressed here to receive as many contributions as possible to
this periodical which is jointly published by the DHI and the Seewetteramt.
For the sake of improving the safety of ships at sea, numerous investi

To investigate further the "dynamic" error of magnetic compasses installed
in survey and research-ship "Gauss", bad weather tests were continued in spring
