the Schmal-Tief. The three latter surveying tasks could not quite be concluded.
The Becca method, operated partly with two navigator equipments, was suc
cessfully applied for the survey of the outer sea area off the isle of Juist
up to Wangerooge, of the Steingrund and the outer part of the Aufleneider.
Within the compass of the above mentioned survey work the mean high water
line was fixed by levelling on "Alte Mellum"; on the Düne of Helgoland; on
Kniepsand; and in the eastern part of Baltrum as well as in the western part of
langeoog.
To procure basic material for a new edition of a fishery chart, survey and
research-vessel "Gauss" undertook a survey-cruise in the waters between Iceland
and Greenland. Surveying work centered in the area from the Gammelloch across
the Anton-Bohrn-Bahk to the fishing ground of Angmagssalik.
In addition to her surveying activity, survey and research-vessel "Gauss"
carried out eight research cruises and trial trips.
The two wreck-searching boats ascertained on the official routes in the off
shore waters, in the river estuaries and in the surveying areas a total of 11
new wreck positions and checked 44 wrecks determined already before as to their
present position, state and depth.
The survey-ship "Eungholt", which was put out of service at the end of the
surveying period, was replaced end of December by the new survey-ship "Siideroog".
Oceanographical work at sea had to be confined, due to the abundance of
material still waiting to be worked up and the considerable amount of routine
work, to some current measurements in the Horth Sea which were carried out in
cooperation with the Federal authorities and those of Schleswig-Holstein concern
ed with coastal engineering. The oceanographic observation material collected by
fishery research-vessel "Anton Dohrn" could to a large extent be evaluated and
utilized. Some members of the staff of the DHI took part in her cruises in the
northern waters.
The studies of numerical calculation methods for the ascertainment of the
wind-conditioned water movement by means of an electronic computing machine and
the kind assistance of Professor Eossby from the Swedish Meteorological Insti
tute at Stockholm were, for the time being, brought to an end.
In cooperation with the Deutsche; Wissenschaftliche Kommission für Meeres
forschung, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea and the
Comité Spècial de l'Année Géophysique Internationale plans for a quasi-synoptic
oceanographic survey of the Horth Atlantic Ocean were set up.
Routine cooperation in the Sailing Direction Work as well as the taking
care of the Ice Service and of the geomagnetic work were done as usual. An Atlas
relating to the ice conditions in the German Bight and in the western Baltic is
in the press.
