General Development- of the D.H.I. during 1957
The number of charts produced by the German Chart Work rose to about
870. This number comprises with the exception of a small remainder the edition
of the charts covering the east-coast of the United States as announced in
last year's report. Track charts and general charts for this area as well as
for the east-coast of Brazil will presumably be available in spring 1958.
From the area of the Indian Ocean 6 charts have so far been reprinted.and
another 14 are being prepared. Although it was intended to produce for the
Uorth Sea charts containing the English Decca hyperbolae, only Decca chart
No.' 196 could so far be issued. However, it is hoped to make charts Nos. 202,
204, 217 and 245 with the English chain inserted available in 1958. The
planned chart for fishermen No. 256 "Gewässer zwischen Island und Grönland"
at the scale of 1 : 1 000 000 including recent survey results of "Gauss"
will appear in early summer 1958. It was due to the difficulties caused by
the moving as mentioned already at the beginning that for a short time orders
could not be carried out immediately upon receipt. In spite of this hindrance
the sale of charts kept with about 110 000 copies at the level of the pre
ceding year.
The work of the survey boats. amongst which the newly built "Süderoog"
has stood her operational test, extended in home waters preponderantly to
the North .Sea. The areas in question were: the sea area off Borkum; the inner
part of the Osterems including Bandzell; the area around Langeoog and Spieker
oog; the Zehnerloch; the sea area and tidal flats at the coast of Süderdith
marschen; the Hever, outer part; the Hever stream with Norderhever and Husumer
Aue; the Süderaue; the Eummelloch; Lister Hoads with the harbour of List;
the area between Hoads and Isle of Helgoland including the outer basin, the
south port and the port of the "Düne". Furthermore the mean high water line
was fixed by levelling on the isle of Uthörn. Surveying and research ship
"Gauss" continued the survey work begun in the preceding year for the planned
new edition of a chart for fishermen by taking soundings in the waters south
west of Iceland on the Eeykjanes Ridge. In addition she made nine further
voyages for the study of navigation on radio aids, for type-testings, trying
out of.nautico-technical instruments and doing oceanographical preliminary
work for the International Geophysical Tear. 11 new wreck positions have been
ascertained, 48 positions of wrecks determined already before were re-checked
and 14 positions at which wrecks were presumed were examined.
The division concerned with oceanography supplied for seven Sailing
Directions the relevant oceanographical contributions such as currents,
nature of the sea bottom, ice and terrestrial magnetism, and, mutually with
the tides service, charts of tidal streams and tidal range. The Atlas on ice
conditions in the German Bight and in the western Baltic appeared in spring
1957. In addition to current measurements carried out in the German Bight in
cooperation with the Wasser- und Schiffahrtsamt Tönning, apparatus and in
struments were tested as a preparatory measure for the International Geo-
