В, Summary
GENERAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE D.H.I. DURING 1957
Again, as in the past, the German. Hydrographic Institute endeavoured in
the year gone by to fulfil its duty towards the public, particularly towards
German shipping. However, as the personnel- situation mentioned in the report
of the preceding year has Ghanged but insignificantly, and as moreover the
moving of some divisions, welcomed as such, into the nearly completed new.
office-building of the federal authorities has brought an additional burden,
and as furthermore the preparation of or participation in the work for the
International Geophysical Tear heavily claimed the staff, the general situation
remained now as. before tense. The Institute is much indebted-both to the-
Deutsche Forscbungsgemeinschaft (German Research Union), and to the relevant
Federal Ministries for placing- at its disposal additional funds for v/ork in
the Geophysical Tear. This work extends to the participation in astronomical
determination of longitudes and latitudes within the scope of the time service,
to the investigation of geomagnetic hay disturbances in Northwest Germany as
well as to oceanographical work in the Horth Atlantic Ocean by survey and ■
research-vessel "Gauss" in cooperation with the fishery research-ship "Anton
Bohrn".
From the field of nautical -publications it can be reported that the
sailing directions "Mittelmeer" (Mediterranean) Part III and "Westkiiste
Frankreichs" (West coast of France) have been re-edited. The Pilot "Hordsee,
nordlicher Tell" (Horth Sea, northern part) will appear around the beginning
of the new year. Two further sailing directions are in the press. Fourteen
other sailing directions were kept up-to-date by supplements, The reprint
of the "Monatskarten fiir den Atlantischen.Ozean" (Monthly Pilot Charts for
the Atlantic Ocean), with corrections, as announced In the preceding year
appeared in April 1957 whilst preparatory-work -in connection with the "Monats-
karten des Indischen Ozeams" (Monthly Pilot Charts for the Indian Ocean)
and the relevant Pilot could be carried on as per plan. The number of copies
printed of the "Hachriehten. fiir Seefahrer'- (German Notices to Mariners) with
enclosures "Zwangswege" (official routes) and "Beckblatter zum Leuchtfeuer-
verzeichnis 1 ' (blocks showing amendments to the German List of Lights) in
creased to 3 200.
All the volumes, of the German List of Lights issued last year were re
placed after one year's run by new editions, and part X (west-side of the
Pacific) was newly published for the first time after 1945, Part XE (east-
side of the Pacific) is in preparation. Its completion cannot be expected
before 1959 due to lack of personnel. Both, the German List of Badio Signals
(H.F.) which has appeared in three volumes in loose-leaf form, and the R/T
service for coastal vessels т/ere kept up-to-date by supplements and amendment
blocks, A new impression of all four volumes was prepared in order to be able
to re-equip ships and to fill up the stock.
