scale of 1 : 1 000 000. This chart which is based essentially on German
surveys shows contour lines spaced a hundred metres apart. It contains
moreover th,e interpolation grid of the Consol radio beacon Bushmills and
other information important for fishermen. The publication of the coastal
charts of the Gulf of Mexico, of the Caribbean Sea, of the West-Indies, of
the east coast of the U.S.A. and of the east coast of Brazil, all of which
had been lacking so far, could be completed in the year under review.
The coastal charts covering the west coast of Central and South America
appeared, with the exception of a few, which will be issued shortly. Prom
the Indonesian area as far as the South Chinese Sea now all general charts
and coastal charts are available.
The technical division of the Chart Establishment is save for a few
minor improvements still to be made, well content with the new accommodations.
The sale of charts kept at about the same level of the preceding year.
The survey craft worked again preponderantly in home waters in the Forth
Sea. The following survey tasks planned for 1958 could be completed: The
sea area between Westerems and Hubertgat; the area of Juister- and Memmert-
Balje with Nordland and Koper-Sand; the sea area and tidal flats around
the isles of Spiekeroog and Wangerooge and the Harle; the area of Falsches
Tief, Neufahrwasser and Gross-Putengat; the sea area and tidal flats of,
the Meldorf Bight and of the inner and outer Eider with the Wesselburener
loch; the sea area and tidal flats of lister Tief, lister ley, Pander Tief
and Wester ley including the fixing of the mean high water line of list-
Ellenbogen; the still outstanding tasks from last year's programme, namely
surveys off Helgoland, and in the Baltic the area of the Hohwacht Bight as
far as Pehmarn Sund, Owing to the advanced season the surveys off Juist,
in the sea area and tidal flats of Scharhorn-Riff, Norder-, Wester- and
Oster-Till and in the Norder- and Süderpiep could not be finished. In
addition, soundings were taken at special request in parts of the Wanger-
ooger Pahrwasser and of the Altes Schmaltief. Within the compass of the
International Geophysical Year survey the research ship "Gauss" carried
out two extensive cruises in the North Atlantic Ocean on behalf of the
"Polar Front Surveys"-programme. She made three further trips in the North
Sea and in the Baltic during which geophysical and radio-technical
investigations, type-testings and out-tests of nautico-technical instruments
were made. 13 new wreck positions could be ascertained in the near coastal
regions of the North Sea and in the Baltic as well as on. official routes;
44- known wrecks were re-checked, and 13 positions, on which wrecks were
suspected, were searched.
In the field of geophysics oceanographic and geomagnetic work during the
International Geophysical Year stood, as mentioned already, in the foreground.
