national Glaciological Greenland Expedition, and a sea area to the southeast
off Iceland was sounded in order to complet the depth data in German charts.
In addition to her surveying work survey vessel "Stideroog" carried out
also seven experimental trips which served preponderantly out-tests of
radar reflectors and of maritime floating emergency transmitters.
A total of approximately 10 000 sm of usable sounding profiles were run
by the survey craft including "Gauss".
The two survey and wreck-searching vessels "Atair" and "Wega" ascertained
10 new wreck positions in the coastal area and on the official routes of
the North Sea and Baltic; they re-checked 57 already known wrecks and examined
18 positions where wrecks could be suspected. Moreover, in the North Sea
2 2
55 km , and in the Baltic 17 km were systematically searched for submarine
obstructions.
In the field of Geophysics new tasks were waiting after conclusion of
the International Geophysical Tear, especially hydrographic investigations
in the Kangerdlugssuaq-Fjord in Western Greenland (within the compass of
the International Glaciological Greenland Expedition during the IGY).
Within the frame of a plan which was agreed upon between the Federal
Ministry of Transport and the Federal Ministry of Economics, further magnetic,
gravimetric and seismic investigations of the North Sea Shelf were carried
out in co-operation with the Bundesanstalt für Bodenforschung at Hannover
(continuation of the investigations made in 1957/58).
Paddle-wheel current measurements on a total of 30 stations were made in
the area off the Isle of Sylt in co-operation with the "Landesstelle für
Gewässerkunde Schleswig-Holstein"; between Heligoland and the mouth of Eiver
Eider in cooperation with the "Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirektion Kiel"; and
in the southern North Sea to the West of the German Bight.
Observations in light-ships were continued and the routine observations
on the route Hamburg - Hull were made as usual. Above this, investigations
on chemico-planktological and bacteriological problems were made in co
operation with the "Biologische Anstalt Helgoland".
From the results of the IGY expeditions the salinity, temperature,
turbidity and oxygen observations won at 510 stations could be processed
and were represented graphically and in parts transferred to punching docu
ments. 523 vertical temperature recordings were also prepared for publication.
As special work the investigations on formation, depth and intensity of
the summerly temperature discontinuity layer in the North Sea was commenced
with. Furthermore the results of the bottom investigations so far obtained
from the North Sea were compiled for publication in "Meereskundliche Beobach
tungen und Ergebnisse". Work in connection with the preparation of largescale
bottom maps of the inner German Bight is in progress.
