being revised and intended to appear in I960, the revision of the coastal
charts of this area will be accomplished.
The "Verzeichnis der Hautischen Karten und Bücher 1 ' (list of Nautical
Charts and Books) which had.become difficult to survey because of the many
corrections, was reprinted. An extra sheet belonging to this list gives 'a
survey of the re-edited 46 blank charts.
ïor the year 19-60 again a voluminous programme of work has been set up.
The arrival of more recent charts from the USSR covering the Gulf of Finland
will make it possible to revise fundamentally the German charts of this
area. Besides the already mentioned revision of the coastal charts of the
German North Sea coast it is planned to bring out a new edition of the
coastal charts of the Netherlandish and Belgian sea areas. Another item in
the programme is the rearranging of track charts for thé entire Aegean Sea;
production of coastal and special charts for Burma and the east coast of
India, as well as the publication of new editions of coastal charts covering ,
the east and west coasts of South America.
The production of new charts and the continuation of all charts with
larger corrections is done now essentially via foil-originals. Hereby it
is possible, by means of more recent methods of reproduction, to save time
and cost and moreover to improve the quality of the charts.'
The sale of the charts with about 125 000 copies increased only slightly
as compared with the preceding year. At present 895 different nautical charts
and nautical auxiliary maps as well as 46 different blank maps are available.
The survey work in 1959 was carried out by survey vessels "Gauss", "Hooge",
"Rüden" and "Süderoog" in home waters in the following areas: sea area
Borkum-Riff; sea area off Juist; inner part of the Osterems with Randzel;
Bey-Bucht ; the seaward area off the East-Frisian Islands Juist up to Spieker
oog; Aussen- and Innenjade including Jade-Busen; sea and tidal flats of the
Nordergründe, western and eastern part; fairway Norder-Elbe and Zehnerloch;
outer and inner part of the Norder- and Süderpiep; Norderhever including
Fühle Schlot, Holmer Fähre, Rummel-Loch, the Strand and Butter-loch; Schweins
rücken at the Süderaue and Yortrapp-Tief including The-Knobs-Rinne and Hörnum-
Loch. Three of these survey tasks were commenced already in 1958 and one in
1956. All the tasks with the exception of the survey of a part of 1 the Norder
gründe and Of a small area of the inner Süderpiep could be accomplished.
Survey and research vessel "Gauss", in addition to her survey tasks in
home waters untertook six research cruises and experimental trips in the
North Sea and Baltic in order to carry out oceanographical, geophysical and
radio-technical investigations as well as type-testings and out-tests of
nautico-technical instruments. During a cruise lasting'about ten weeks in
the waters off Greenland and Iceland, the Kängerdlugssuaq-Fjord in Western
Greenland was hydrographically surveyed within the compass of the Inter-
