General Development of the G.H.I, during I960
61 known ones were re-checked. Both ships, reconstructed former fishery
cutters, shall he replaced next year by new ships.
Oceanographical work was carried out within the compass of the interna
tional Overflow programme between Iceland and the Faroe Islands in which
9 vessels of various nations took part. A deep-sea current-meter which
allows measurements down to a depth of 500 m was operated hereby for the
first time. In the Baltic Entrances the discontinuity layer was investigated.
Further current measurements were carried out under the programme of current
measurements in the North Sea. Tides were measured by deep sea gauges in
cooperation with the "Wasser- und Schiffahrtsamt Tönning".
Thanks to the kindness of the National Institute of Oceanography in
Wormley, England, the sea-gravimeter could be tried out on board of the
"Discovery". A new Proton Magnetometer was used for the first time within
the framework of geophysical investigations of the North Sea Shelf which were
carried out in cooperation with the "Bundesanstalt für Bodenforschung".
The processing and evaluation of the observations of an oceanographical
and geophysical nature referred primarily to the results won during the Inter
national Geophysical Tear, to routine observations off Helgoland, observations
made in lightships; they dealt with the question of the summerly thermocline
in the North Sea, its formation, depth and intensity. An essential part of
the water samples could immediately be examined and the salinity determined
on board with the aid of the Salinometer which was kindly placed at the
D.H.I.'s disposal by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Investigations of
the sediment and of the sea bed which were carried out in cooperation with
the "Wasser- und Schiffahrtsamt Tönning" and the "Biologische Anstalt Helgo
land" will lead to the production of large-scaled bottom maps for the eastern
part of the German Bight. Hydrographical, oceanographical as well as geophysi
cal material was made available as usual for inclusion in sailing directions
and charts.
The Ice Service of the G.H.I. published as in the preceding years printed
ice reports and outline maps for shipping covering however now also the waters
around Greenland and Newfoundland. First trials were made to transmit by
television a facsimile of ice charts together with the weather maps.
The provisional laboratory established in Hamburg-Alsterdorf' to supervise
the sea water with regard to radioactive admixtures took up its work and
carried out first measurements in the fairway of River Weser when the nuclear
propelled submarine "Triton" visited Bremerhaven. It is planned to erect a
new building in Sülldorf near Hamburg which is to house this laboratory to
gether with other Federal Institutes.
