The renewal of the German Chart Work commenced in the previous years
hy using foil-originals instead of copper-plates carrying out at the same
time all corrections, and by using strip-films for the mounting could so far
be carried out for about 40 per cent of all chart originals. The sale of
charts with about 132 000 copies kept the turnover of last year.
The charts covering the Baltic could be improved by taking advantage of
more recent material received from the USSR. With the publication of the
fourth coastal chart the whole Finnish area of the Gulf of Bothnia could be
covered. All coastal charts, completely revised, comprising the German North
Sea area will be available in 1961.
The areas of the Persian Gulf, the West Coast of Africa, and of the East
Coast of Canada are now completely covered since the last still missing
coastal charts have been published.
At the suggestion of the "Verband der Hochseefischereien" (Union of Deep-
Sea Fisheries) 4 new fishery charts at a scale of 1 : 500 000 covering the
area of the Irminger Sea were placed at the disposal of German deep-sea fisher
men.
The survey work as planned in the Baltic in the area from Schleimünde down
to Eckernförde Bight could not be completed in the year under review because
of coastal engineering not having been brought to an end. In the North Sea
the following areas were surveyed: sea area between Westerems and Hubertgat;
Jade, outer part, Wangerooge fairway and Qldoogrinne; sea and tidal flats of
the Khechtsände including Wurster Watt and Meyers Legde; sea and tidal flats
of the eastern part of the Nordergründe with Scharhömriff, Norder-, Wester
and Ostertill, Bakenloch and Neu-Cappeler Tief; sea and tidal flats off the
coast of Süderdithmarschen with Nebenfahrwasser in the Klotzenloch; inner
part of Norder- and Süderpiep; Norderaue, western part, and Amrumtief; Hörnum
tief with Eidumtief and Wester- and Osterley; sea area off the west coast of
the Isle of Sylt. Two of these survey tasks were commenced already in 1959.
With the exception of the survey of the sea area and tidal flats of the Khecht
sände including Wurster Watt and Meyers Legde, of which a small area could not
be sounded due to the advanced season, all above mentioned surveys could be
accomplished as per plan.
Survey and research ship "Gauß" in addition to her survey tasks undertook
nine experimental trips in the North Sea and Baltic and in the northern Bay
of Biscay in order to carry out oceanographical, geophysical and radio tech
nical investigations as well as typetestings. A total of approximately 6 600 sm
of usable sounding profiles were run by the survey craft in the year under
review. In the North Sea and Baltic "Atair" and "Wega" ascertained 32 new
wreck positions in the coastal areas and on the official routes as well;
