amount of evaluational work was left, in the other 6/10 of the evaluation was
done. For especially urgent reasons a small area of the sea and of the tidal
flats of the North Sea was additionally surveyed. These surveys were carried
out by the survey vessels "Hooge", "Rüden", and "Süderoog" running a total of
4 518 sm of sounding profiles. The survey and research vessel "Gauß" performed
10 research and trial cruises into the North and Baltic Seas which mainly served
the purpose of oceanographic, geophysical, geologic, and radio technical in
vestigations but also type testing and trials of nautical and technical instru
ments. During these cruises nearly 12 370 sm were covered. The two new survey
and wreck searching vessels "Atair" and "Wega” taken into service for the search
of wrecks only since July 5, 1962, located 9 new positions of wrecks in the
coastal area and on the official routes in the North and Baltic Seas, re-checked
39 already known wrecks and systematically investigated 22 reported positions
and 2 areas of the sea of a total of 33 qsm for underwater obstacles.
38 000 instruments and devices of the nautical ship's equipment were tested
in the G.H.I. or in its branch establishments. The test of D/F sets whether they
fit navigational purposes was intensified. In the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) the G.H.I. supported the international standardization in
the field of magnetic compasses.
For a greater number of devices and parts of the devices, the echo sounders
and radio navigation systems in particular, the minimum protective distance
from the magnetic compass was determined. A transistorized device was built and
tested in the gyrocompass testing room to control the rotor speed of gyrocompass
motor generators. Thus a 10 times better control accuracy was obtained. Diffe
rent types of lamps were tested in order to find out whether they are fit to be
used as position lights. Continuous experiments have proved that - against the
general opinion of the shipping circles - the prescribed water-tight glass covers
have no impact on the durability and intensity of light of the lamps. Further
investigations elucidated the durability of low voltage lamps when operated with
overvoltage.
For critical frequency bearing purposes a cross coil antenna was symmetric
ally fixed to the mast of VFS "Gauß". Correct bearing conditions resulted for
bearings in all directions on the whole critical frequency band (1,5-3,2 Mc/s).
10 radar and two D/F sets were subjected to complete or shortened type testing.
3 D/F sets were again tested due to changes in the model. In 1961 the obligatory
annual re-checking of D/F sets as to whether they are fit to meet navigational
requirements was started in the Hamburg area. And in 1962 the personnel which
will also be employed to conduct the test work in the branch establishments
