and Radio Navigational Aids, into independent sections and to fill them with 
the respective personnel. The section Priifung nautischer derate usw. (test 
ing of nautical instruments etc.) was maintained. 
The 3 sections in the department VII were united into one section Druck- 
schriften (publications)((now AB)). 
The new organisation plan is enclosed in this annual report. 
In May 1962 it was for the third time since the end of World War II that 
the Federal Republic of Germany participated in the International Hydrographic 
Conference taking place every five years. The German delegation consisted of 
Dr. Zwiebler, President of the G.H.I. and leader of the delegation, as well as 
three members of the G.H.I., and a representative of the Bundesmarine (German 
Navy). Two members of the German delegation acted in committees as Vice Chair 
men. 
Once again the Nautical Documents Committee dealt with the introduction of 
the decimal system and the uniform spelling of geographic names. Uniform rules 
for the pilots and Notices to Mariners were elaborated. While the Chart Committee 
dwelt on the standardization of symbols and abbreviation in charts, the negotia 
tions of the Oceanic Soundings Committee focussed on the General Bathymetric 
Chart of the Oceans. Questions of the tide prediction and the promulgation of the 
results in other countries were approached in the discussions of the Tides Com 
mittee. At the plenary assembly Rear Admiral Charles Pierce, U.S.A., Vice Ad 
miral Alfredo Viglieri, Italy, and Vice Admiral Alberto dos Santos Franko, Brasil, 
were elected directors of the International Hydrographic Bureau for the tenure 
lasting from 1st September 1962 to 31st,August 1967. 
The results obtained at this meeting will help to further the safety at sea. 
As far as the G.H.I. is concerned, the Monaco resolutions have been realised. 
In 1962 a total of 938 charts of different contents was contained in the 
Chart Establishment out of which almost 140 000 copies were distributed. This 
number surpasses the G.H.I. chart production of the preceding years. 
Except 2 copies all coast charts of the southern Baltic have been newly 
edited. Out of the charts still missing for the western part of the Gulf of 
Finland one copy was meanwhile published. The new special charts for the river 
Elbe are available for the area Hamburg - Brunsbüttelkoog. The compilation of 
the coast charts of the west coast of Africa was continued; two charts could 
be published in the year under review. The last general charts for the east
