The German Hydrographic Institute within the year 1963
monthly respectively, in an edition of 1,500 copies. They contain 409
cancelling leaves and 679 corrections, or 104 cancelling leaves and 127
corrections respectively. In the year under review a still closer co-opera
tion with practical navigators, shipping organisations, and schools of naviga
tion was achieved; 800 reports were received from 1,500 voluntary assistants
and included in the Nautical Publications.
As to periodicals, the numbers "Winterbetonnung der deutschen Küstenge
wässer" (winter buoyage in the German coastal waters) and "Minengefährdete
•Z \
Gebiete" (mined areas), the monthly lists of P and T notices^ , the quarter
ly list of corrections to German charts, and the weekly lists of the tempo
rary alterations in the list of lights were again issued. The tide tables
and calendars, the results of the geomagnetic observations, the German Hydro-
graphic Journal, the "Seewart", and the "Meereskundliche Beobachtungen und
Ergebnisse" (oceanographic observations and results) were published to the
same extent. The complicated ice conditions called for a detailed instruction
of the shipping circles exceeding the normal measure; thus 125 ice reports
were printed and 45 general charts of the distribution of ice published.
A total of 612,512 publications were supplied from the store, 48,345 for ex
change purposes.
The Services of the GHI too, were fulfilling their routine tasks. The
Hautical Warning Service broadcasted a total of 1,199
urgent notices to mariners. The Wind Effect and Storm
Surge Warning Service gave 38 special warnings besides
the morning and evening forecasts. The Time Service transmitted
the time signals about 10 times a day. The extraordinarily severe winter of
1962/63 demanded much from the Ice Service. The ice cover in the
German Bight maximally stretched as far as 20 nm to the West of Helgoland.
In the south-western Baltic the eastern boundary line of the ice took the
course from the southern end of the isle of Öland to almost to the East of
the isle of Bornholm and then in the southern direction to the coast of
Pommem, when the ice cover had reached its summit. Besides the ice reports
and the general charts of the ice distribution already mentioned, 1,987 pieces
of information were given..The Documentation of Hydro-
graphic Publications comprises 4,262 respective titles.
SRV "Gauß" and the survey vessel "Süderoog" in particular covered 500 odd nm
in the Worth and Baltic Seas to measure the radioacti
vity of the bottom and the water of the sea; the activity was ascertained
for 2,000 positions partly in situ, partly in the laboratory. The Observa
tory Wingst reported the Geomagnetic Disturbances
