issued. 713 different mostly five-coloured charts were printed in an edition
of 179,000 copies and 86 mostly four-coloured block corrections in an edition
of 68,000 copies. With the number of the charts issued or under construction,
the extension of the Chart Establishment as to charts is for the time being
completed. A further extension to areas not covered by charts, as there are
Australia, the groups of islands in thè Pacific, etc., is for economic rea
sons not planned. The issue of new charts on a better scale with a new cuttin
of the sheets will continue to, be a means of modernization if necessary.
Por surveying purposes 6,160 nm of sounding profiles were run in the home
waters of the North and Baltic Seas by the survey vessels "Hooge", "Rüden",
and "Süderoog" and, to a small extent, also by the survey and wreck search
ing vessel "Wega". In the coastal area and on the official routes in the
North and Baltic Seas 77 wrecks were investigated for the first time or re
examined as well as 10 other positions and a sea area of 145 snm systematical
ly searched for wrecks or other obstacles. The survey and research vessel
"Gauß" performed seven research and trial cruises into the North Sea and the
Baltic covering 13,000 nm. On June 20, the wreck searching vessel "Atair"
ran into the wreck"Ceres" in the river Elbe and sank because the buoy mark
ing the wreck was passed on the wrong side. After her reparation, she is
again operating since December. The hyperbolae of several Becca chains were
drawn on the geographic grid so to improve the position fixing of SRV "Gauß".
The computation work involved was done by the electronic computer IBM 1620.
The following books were published in the Sailing Direction Establishment:
Irish Sea, Voi. II, West and North Coast of Norway, Part I, Red Sea and Gulf
of Aden, "the North Atlantic Islands and West India, Part III. The many-sided
contents of the publication "Pür Brücke und Kartenhaus" (for bridge and
chart house), for the first time issued as pilot, met with approval so that
mare than 3,000 copies were ordered. With the issue of the handbook of the
P)
European North Coast of the Soviet Union now in print ', the re-edition of
the pilots of the European coast and sea areas except the Mediterranean will
be completed. This aim has, by far, not been reached for the non-European
coast and sea areas for want of personnel so that shipping will have to
continue being satisfied for some time with voluminous supplements to these
pilots. In the year under review the Notices to Mariners with a weekly edi
tion of 3,450 copies contained 5,453 articles, notices and notifications;
13 parts of the list of lights were re-edited and 376 blocks with 3,848
individual corrections added to the Notices to Mariners; the supplements to
the ring-binders of the German list of Rad.io Signals and the R/T Service for
coastal vessels were semi-monthly issued in an edition of 2,500 copies, or
2) published on February 20, 1964
