D. Summary
THE GERMAN HYDROGRAPIC INSTITUTE WITHIN THE YEAR 1963
In. 1963 the "Schiffsinspektion fur die Schiffe des UHI" (a "body to inspect
the vessels of the SHI) was set up. It has to coordinate the contributions
of all departments to the management of the vessels, as far as the readiness
to sail (the safety of the vessels e.g.) and the functions of the vessels
(their employment e.g.) are concerned. It consists of 11 staff members with
the Head of the Nautical Department in the chair.
The SHI and the hydrographic offices of the states bordering the North
Sea, as there are Sreat Britain, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden
have joined to the North Sea Hydrographic Commission. At a conference in
September in Sundsvall and Stockholm the problems of safe shipping in the
North Sea were jointly discussed, thus e.g. the investigation and sounding
of suitable waterways for ocean-draught vessels, the joint edition of the
42 sheets of the fisheries chart 1 : 300,000 already mentioned in last year's
report, and a better solution to the questions of the tides in the North Sea.
From October 2-7 the British survey vessel "Vidal" under the
command of Captain Ritchie, R.N., paid an informal visit to Hamburg with
Rear Admiral E.G. Irving and six chief civil assistants of the Admiralty
Hydrographic Department as well as two geophysicists of the University of
Cambridge on board. Admiral Irving and his assistants saw the GHI and dis
cussed questions of' the North Sea Hydrographic Commission besides detailed
conversations on their special subject. The same purpose served the visit of
the Dutch survey vessel " L u y m e s " with Kapitein ter Zee, I.R.W.
langeraar, Hydrographer of the Netherlands' Navy, on board. The vessel paid
a routine call on Hamburg lasting from October 11 - 14.

The new research vessel of the Federal Republic of Germany ' under the
joint management of the GHI and the German Research Association was launched
by floatation on August 30.
In the Chart Establishment the last charts were printed on a stone print
press, all other charts being printed now on an offset press. The process of
changing from direct to indirect printing involved the production of 2,300
foil and 2,600 plate copies. In the year under review 31 new charts were
