strongly supported the experiments with Hi-fix systems. '14 type tests were
carried out in the year under review and, in addition, informatory courses
held on the survey of D/F sets on hoard.
In .the fields of Geophysics and Astronomy a radar photoplot was
thoroughly studied during cruises into the Atlantic, and the Baltic: those
interested in shipping circles took the opportunity to inspect the unit
with a view to preventing collisions. On the occasion of the 12th General
Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, about 70 participants
visited our Time and Latitude Service. The PZT could again be technically
improved. The results of latitude and time fixing have, as always, been
transmitted or exchanged on an international basis. In this year under
review, SOT "Gauss" performed the last of eight partial cruises serving
the geophysical and tectonic investigation of the Berth Sea subbottom
structure. The department "Geophysics and Astronomy" participated with
measuring the total intensity of the earth's magnetic field and with
gravimetric measurements. The evaluation of the data obtained, the gravity
anomalies in particular, was completed and the results represented in an
isanomalles chart. More than 100 programmes are now available for the
electronic computer IBM 1620. For less complicated computational work a
three-signs code was developed so that the leaders of the single sections
can draw up smaller programmes themselves.
Five smaller cruises into the Hoith and Baltic Seas served oceanographic
investigations. They covered radiological and hydrographic measurements in
the mouth of the river Elbe, the taking of bottom samples in the German
Bight, and investigations of the mixing processes in the northern Baltic.
The Khodamin B experiments axe now completed and the results published.
On account of this publication it was decided at the ICES meeting in Copen
hagen to carry out a large-scale test in the next few years, with several
vessels of different Borth Sea states. Preparations have already been made.
The continuous current measurements started in 1963 off the mouth of the
river Eider are now completed and thus the observations of almost 400 days
available. The drift current investigations, too, started in autumn 1962
with about 5,000 drift cards have been finished. Bow that the drift of
about 65 per cent, of the cards liberated into the sea was again analysed,
the preliminary result is confirmed according to which the velocity of the
drift current is 4.2 per cent, the velocity of the wind. The investigations
of the behaviour of the therxnocline in the Borth Sea, too, could be
completed by the edition of an atlas. The continuous measurement of the
tracer amount dissolved in sea water proved successful. Several judgements
on the possibility of depositing industrial wastes in the sea were given.
The geological work at sea and in the laboratories centred on systematically
