As  to  the  Services  of  the  G.H.I.,  the  Nautical  Warning  Service  broadcasted ­
  2,765  notices;  the  Wind  Effect  and  Storm  Surge  Warning  Service
promulgated  41  special  warnings  besides  the  regular  morning  and  evening
forecasts;  The  Time  Service  made  1,810  star  observations  during  79  nights;
on  different  frequencies  a  total  of  about  8,000  precision  time  signals  were
emitted;  the  Ice  Service  gave  129  pieces  of  information  about  the  ice
situation;  the  Documentation  of  hydrographic  publications  comprised  5,700
titles  of  purely  hydrographic  subjects.  The  survey  vessels  covered  1,315  nm
in  the  North  and  Baltic  Seas  for  measuring  the  radioactivity  of  sea  bottom
and  water;  for  about  500  positions  the  activity  was  determined  partly  in
situ,  partly  in  laboratories.  The  Geomagnetic  Observatory  Wingst  daily  informed ­
  the  Central  Engineering  Office  for  Telecommunications  at  Darmstadt
of  the  geomagnetic  disturbances;  about  51,000  instruments  and  devices  of  the
ship's  equipment  were  tested  on  land,  more  than  2,400  compasses  adjusted  as
well  as  radar  sets  and  direction  finders  accepted  and  tested  on  board.
The  activities  of  the  Nautical  Engineering  department  have  especially
been  affected  by  the  "Gesetz  über  die  Aufgaben  des  Bundes  auf  dem  Gebiet
der  Seeschiffahrt".  While  obligatory  tests  have  hitherto,  only  been  prescribed
for  instruments  covered  by  the  regulations  for  the  ship's  equipment  and
accident  prevention,  it  will  now  also  be  necessary  to  test  gyro  compasses,
echo  sounders,  air  signal  apparatus,  and  other  devices.  There  have  been
detailed  discussions  in  this  year  under  review  as  to  the  extent  up  to  which
use  can  be  made  of  the  possibility  offered  by  the  act  to  confer  the  execution ­
  of  such  tasks  to  qualified  persons  and  to  the  prerequisites  to  be
established  for  this  purpose.  The  extension  of  functions  resulting  from  this
act  do  not  only  refer  to  the  test  of  instruments  but  also  to  the  nautical-1)

situation.
