THE GERMAN HYDROGRAPHIC INSTITUTE WITHIN THE YEAR 1965
The most important event was the change-over in the G.H.I. presidency.
On 31st July Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Zwiebler retired under the age-limit
and Professor Dr. Hans Ulrich Roll was appointed new president. This
was performed in a ceremony by the Federal Minister of Transport, Dr.-Ing.
Hans-Christoph Seebohm, with numerous invited guests present. Part II "Neu
er Präsident des Deutschen Hydrographischen Instituts" (new President of the
G.H.I.) provides the speeches made on this occasion.
The year under review with the "Gesetz über die Aufgaben des Bundes auf
dem Gebiet der Seeschiffahrt" (act of the functions of the Federal Republic
of Germany in the field of shipping) of 24th May, 1965, brought a new legal
basis for the G.H.I. activities. The wording of the relevant § 4 is given

The long expected examination of the G.H,I, structure by the "Bundes
beauftragter für die Wirtschaftlichkeit in der Verwaltung" (a federal agent
for economical administrative management) finally took place in this year
under review from 31st May to 1st October, with several interruptions in-
between.
The "Seewart" medal for long years of voluntary assistance at sea was
awarded to three masters. - Under the continental shelf act various appli
cants have been granted the licence for seismic measurements and exploratory
drilling operations.
On 18th May the research vessel "Meteor" returned from her first research
cruise into the Indian Ocean. This cruise was performed under the auspices
of the German Research Association and formed part of the International
Indian Ocean Expedition.
The necessary conversions done, the "Meteor" on 10th August departed for
her second great cruise which brought her back to Hamburg on 16th December.
This joint cruise of German Research Association and G.H.I. headed for the
equatorial Atlantic as German contribution to the International Quiet Sun
Year, IQSY. The coordinator and scientist in charge of the main part of the
expedition was Professor Dr, Karl Brocks, University of Hamburg, who under
the title "IQSY - Expedition Meteor" gave a summarizing description of the
cruise in the research report No. 11 of the German Research Association.
