Jahresbericht Nr. 21/1966
The Chart Establishment experienced a slight decrease in the sales of
charts, amounting in 1966 to 170,114 copies. In 1965 the changes in the
buoyage of the Scandinavian waters had led to a greater demand for charts.
Compared with 1964, however, the sales of charts increased by 11,400 copies.
Much time is saved in the printing of chart blocks by the method of direct
copying from the corrected originals on to printing plates.
In hydrographic surveying our survey vessels have run 9,400 nm of
sounding profiles in the home waters. 6,989 nm of the south-east Greenland
shelf, insufficiently sounded so far, were surveyed by KV "Meteor", thus
employed for the first time in hydrographic surveying. Our wreck searching
vessels searched 1,068 square nautical miles in the North and Baltic Seas
for underwater obstacles and located 12 unknown wrecks. The survey and
research vessel ".Gauss" performed eight research and trial cruises into
the North and Baltic Seas covering a distance of 10,584 nm. A charter
airplane was employed for aerophotogrammetrie work over the tidal lands
off the western coast of Schleswig-Holstein serving hydrographic surveying.
The Sailing Directions Establishment issued new editions of the follow
ing books: Stir Brücke und Kartenhaus (for bridge and chart house); Nordsee-
Handbuch, östlicher Teil (North Sea handbook, eastern part); Handbuch des
Kanals, I. Teil (handbook of the Channel, Part I); Mittelmeer-Handbuch,
II. Teil (Mediterranean handbook, Part II); Handbuch der Süd- und Ostküste
Afrikas, I. Teil (handbook of the southern and eastern coasts of Africa,
Part I). The German Notices to Mariners, with a weekly edition of 3,650
pieces, delivered about 5,000 articles, notices, and notifications. For
rationalization purposes, the German list of lights is being given a new
form providing the data of a light in two columns on one page.
The department Nautical Engineering could advance the development of
the induction compass with field strength indicator. The vibrator table
for compass tests is under construction at the technical workshop of the
G.H.I.. Standardization of compass dimensions shall, according.to a
resolution of the "International Organization for Standardization" (ISO),
be restricted for the time being to a few dimensions. The stress on nautical
instruments aboard ships was tested during a "Meteor" cruise. The different
sorts of kerosene available on the market produce luminous intensities in
the burners of navigation lights at the lower limit of minimum values.
Investigations into whether an improvement in bearing accuracy can be
achieved at the receiving station by separating the electromagnetic field
of the radio transmitter into ground and sky waves by means of a special
antenna positioning diagram yielded negative results.
