E. Summary
THE GERMAN HYDROGRAPHIC INSTITUTE WITHIN THE YEAR 1966
The research vessel "Meteor" which is operated, jointly by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft and the G.H.I. was in 1966 at the disposal of the
latter. Members of the G.H.I. and scientists from 21 institutes and other
research agencies, partly also from abroad, participated in the five
cruises of the ship. The following summary provides the cruises and the
pertinent research work of the G.H.I.:
Cruise No. 3, 19 February - 29 March, scientist in charge of the cruise
ER Dr. H. Kautsky;
oceanographic and radiological investigations of a sea
area in the Atlantic between the Azores and Portugal for
its suitability as dumping area for packaged radioactive
wastes: bottom and water samples; determining the dis
continuity layer; deep current measurements; in situ
radiation measurements on the sea floor; surveying bottom
profiles; test of the pressure-resistance of packages.
Cruise No. 4, 22 April - 9 June, scientist in charge of the cruise:
RR D. Voppel;
geophysical, morphological, and geological investigations
of the Reykjanes Ridge and in the southern contiguous
zone with fracture tectonics: rock and sediment samples;
total and vertical intensity of the earth's magnetic
field; gravity.
Oceanographic investigation of the entrance of North
Atlantic bottom water into the Irminger Sea: bathysonde;
hydrographic series; current measurements.
Measurement of the accelerations produced by the sea
at the vessel.
Cruise No. 5, 19 June - 15 July, scientist in charge of the cruise:
ORR Dr. G. -lomczak;
oceanographic investigation of the hydrographic-chemical
conditions and of the circulation in the Skagerrak:
bathysonde; hydrographic series; chemical measurements;
current measurements; drift and anchor stations.
Reflecting properties of fixed and floating targets
under radar pulses of different frequencies.
