The routes of the single cruises can be seen in Fig. on p. . During-
these cruises the ! 'Meteor" covered a distance of totally 27,770 nm.
The "Seewart" medal in silver was awarded to Prof, Otto Steppes and
Captain Gottfried Clausen.
Xn the Chart Establishment 192,897 charts were sold, which is the great
est number of charts sold since 1945 within one year. The hyperbolae of the
Frisian Decca chain for Decca charts were produced by the kind assistance
of various local agencies by means of electronically controlled drawing
devices.
For hydrographic surveying the survey vessels of the BHI covered
11,b4l nm of sounding profiles in the home waters. The wreck searching
vessels searched a sea area of 453 sqnm in the North and Baltic Seas for
underwater obstacles and located 13 wrecks so far unknown. The survey and
research vessel "Gauss" conducted 4 cruises into the North and Baltic Seas
covering a distance of 4,iS4 nm. Since the operation of the Hi-Fix chain
of the Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirektion Kiel the DHI has at its disposal,
from the isle of Wangerooge to the isle of Sylt, this exact method of hy
perbolic navigation for position fixing in surveying. An order for a new
construction to replace the old survey vessels "Hooge" and "Rüden" was
placed.
The Sailing Directions Establishment issued the following new editions;
Handbuch für Belte und Sund (handbook of the Belts and Sound); Handbuch für
Skagerrak und Kattegat (handbook of the Skagerrak and Kattegat); Handbuch
der Westküste Amerikas, X. Teil (handbook of the west coast of America,
part I); Westindien-Handbuch, II. Teil (handbook of the West Indies, part
II). The German "Notices to Mariners", with a weekly edition of 3,000
copies, disseminated more than 5,000 articles, notices, and notifications.
In co-operation with the Seewetteramt of the Deutscher Wetterdienst, the
4th edition of the "Monatskarten für den Nordatlantischen Ozean" was re
vised. Owing to the unusually great number of corrections, all volumes of
the "Nautischer Funkdienst" had to be newly edited.
