E. Summary
THE GERMAN HYDROGRAPHIC INSTITUTE IN THE YEAR lyb?
The Resolution No. 2172> by which the United Nations called tor inves
tigations into the natural resources of the sea and their exploitation,
raised a number of questions in respect of science, technology, law, and
international co-operation. Therefore, a group of representatives of the
most outstanding scientific bodies met in July for discussions in Helio
Cabala and Rome, while a special working group of the Intergovernmental
Commission (IOC) met in September in The Hague, and the 3th General Assem
bly of this Commission in October in Paris. The IOC as well as the World
Meteorological Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) try to pool their efforts in intergovernmental oceanic research,
presently, at least, by means of joint working groups. Members of the DHI
participated in all the said negotiations and in further working groups;
the President of the DHI headed the German delegation in Paris.
The President of the DHI and the heads of two DHI departments attended
the IX International Hydrographic Conference held in Monaco in April and
May. This Conference brought about, in addition to the results achieved in
its special fields of activity, the acceptance of a Convention as a basis
of* international law for the co-operation of the hydrographic services in
an International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO).
In Switzerland the XIV General Assembly of the International Union of
Geodesy and Geophysics took place in Semtember and October. It was attended
by several DHI scientists.
In co-operation with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the
Deutsches Qzeanographisches Datenzentrum (DOD) was set up. It serves the
national and international exchange of oceanographic data according to the
rules of the IOC.
In 1967 the research vessel "Meteor" was at the disposal of the Deut
sche Forschungsgemeinschaft. In September the DFG programme was fulfilled
and the ship could be used for two more cruises of the DHI, in which scien
tists of other institutions, too, took part. The cruises and the work of
the DHI are mentioned below:
Cruise No. 11: October 16 - November 2; senior scientist:
ORR Dr. H. Weidernann;
trials of new devices and new methods of measure
ment; in particular, the placement and retrieval
