Director and Professor Dr. Georg Koopmann, Permanent Deputy to the President 
and head of Oceanographic Department, retired at the end of the year. He had 
been with the DHI since 1957. He headed the Sea Level Forecast and Storm Surge 
Warning Service for 10 years. Since 1976 he was responsible for the protection of 
the marine environment. He then took charge of the Oceanographic Department 
in 1984 and greatly influenced the DHI’s scientific work. He was succeeded by 
Director and Professor Dietrich Voppel, previously head of Physical Properties of 
Ocean Water.
