THE DEUTSCHES HYDROGRAPHISCHES INSTITUT (DHI) IN 1984
The DHI is a Central Marine Navigation and Marine Environment Authority
within the jurisdiction of the Federal Minister of Transport. It has the
task of surveying the seas, publishing the charts and nautical books,
and testing the nautical equipment used on board ship. Moreover, it has
to promote navigation and High Seas fisheries by natural scientific and
nautical-technical research, and to ensure the protection of the marine
environment.
The total budget comprised DM 12.2 million revenues and DM 67.7 million
expenditures.
The Hydrographic Services (Tide, Sea Level Forecast and Storm Surge
Warning Service, Ice Service, Time Service for Shipping, Geomagnetic
Service) again fulfilled their tasks for the safety of navigation.
The DHI published 5 Pilots as new editions. 12 nautical books were
brought up-to-date by means of Supplement. In addition, the booklets
"Bekanntmachung der Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirektion Nord zur See
schiff ahrtstraßen-Ordnung" and "Winterbetonnung der Küstengewässer der
Bundesrepublik Deutschland", the "Nautisches Jahrbuch oder Ephemeriden
und Tafeln für das Jahr 1985", and the accompanying booklets to the 4
sets of charts for sport-boats on the North Sea. Of the "Verzeichnis der
Leuchtfeuer und Signalstellen" (List of Lights and Signal Positions), 5
Parts were published as new edition. The "Nautischer Funkdienst" and the
"Sprechfunk für Küstenschiffahrt" were continued by 12 Supplements each.
The Yacht Radio Services "Nord- und Ostsee" and "Mittelmeer", as well as
the Table "Wetter- und Warnfunk" appeared as special prints. The "Nach
richten für Seefahrer" (Notices to Mariners) was published with a weekly
issue of 3,200 copies. By direction of the Federal Minister of Trans
port, the booklet "Sicherheit in der Sportschiffahrt im Seebereich"
(Safety in sport-boat navigation on the seas) was republished. 309 nau
tical reports, which came in from voluntary collaborators were evaluat
ed.
The chart portfolio published 21 new charts, 108 new editions, 161 up
dated reprints, and 126 replacement pages.
Of the 14 international charts of the North Sea, which are to be pro
cessed by the DHI, 3 charts were produced which replace the national
charts 45, 46, 49, 87, and 103.
The chart coverage of the German Baltic Sea and North Sea coasts with
sport-boat charts was concluded with the issue of the chart portfolio
no. 3013 "Nordfriesische Inseln mit Helgoland".
In response to the suggestion of the chart users, charts of the Baltic
Sea were also published with a dense geographical graticule.
The graphic technique, owing to the further modernisation of the ma
chines available, was also able to cope in 1984 with the technical-
