5 GENERAL REPORT
THE DEUTSCHES HYDROGRAPHISCHES INSTITUT (DHI) IN 1983
The DHI is a Central Marine Navigation and Marine Environment Authority
within the jurisdiction of the Federal Minister of Transport. It has the
tasks of surveying the seas, publishing the charts and nautical books,
and testing the nautical equipment used on board ship. Moreover, it has
to promote navigation and High Seas fisheries by natural scientific and
nautical-technical research, and to ensure the protection of the marine
environment.
The total budget in 1982 comprised DM 12.3 million revenues and DM 66.4
million expenditures.
808 persons were employed in the DHI.
The Hydrographic Services (Tide, Sea Level Forecast and Storm Surge
Warning Service, Ice Service, Time Service for Shipping, Geomagnetic
Service) again fulfilled their tasks for the safety of navigation.
The Research Vessel "Meteor", used jointly with the Deutsche Forschungs
gemeinschaft (German Research Association), undertook three research
cruises. The voyages concentrated upon oceanographical, biological, and
geophysical investigations in the sea areas off Northwest Africa, be
tween the Canary Islands and the Azores, the Sierra-Leone Sill near the
Equator, the North Sea, the Skagerrak, and the Kattegat. During the 65th
cruise, the R.V. "Meteor", amongst others, also participated in the
Nordostatlantisches Monitoring-Programm (NOAMP), (North-East Atlantic
Monitoring Programme).
The Research Vessel "Gauß" undertook 14 research and monitoring cruis
es in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. During a voyage in the North
Atlantic, within the framework of international programmes, the ability
of satellite emergency position indicating radio beacons and small ship-
earth stations (SES) to transmit signals over an INMARSAT were tested.
The Survey and Wreck Search Ships, "Atair" and "Wega", have checked 136
already known wrecks and positions at which submarine hindrances were
suspected, and found 32 new wrecks.
For the hydrographic survey, the Survey and Research Ship "Komet" and
the Survey Ship "Süderoog" ran 14,291 nautical miles of soundings in the
North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
Four Pilots were published, 13 nautical books were brought up-to-date by
means of Supplements. In addition, the booklets "Bekanntmachungen der
Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirektion Nordwest zur Schiffahrtsstraßen-Ord-

Deutschland" as well as the "Nautisches Jahrbuch oder Ephemeriden und
Tafeln für das Jahr 1984", and the Tide Tables were published.
Of the "Verzeichnis der Leuchtfeuer und Signalstellen" (List of Lights
