THE DEUTSCHES HYDROGRAPHISCHES INSTITUT (DHI ) IN 1980
In 1980 the Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut published new
editions of four pilots and brought 17 pilots up to date by
means of supplements. The DHI also issued the booklets "Bekannt
machung der Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirektion Nordwest zur See
schi f f ahrt s traßen-0 rdnung (Additional regulations to the traffic
regulations for waterways navigable by sea-going vessels in the
Federal Republic of Germany of the Wasser- und Schiffahrtsdirek
tion Nordwest) and "Winterbetonnung der Küstengewässer der Bun
desrepublik Deutschland" (Winter buoyage of the coastal waters
of the Federal Republic of Germany), as well as the "Nautisches
Jahrbuch oder Ephemeriden und Tafeln für das Jahr 1981" (Nauti
cal Yearbook, or Ephemerides and Tables for 1981). Seven parts
of the "Verzeichnis der Leuchtfeuer und Signalstellen" (List of
Lights and Signals), consisting altogether of 14 parts, were re
printed. The three volumes of "Nautischer Funkdienst" (List of
Radio Signals) and the volume "Sprechfunk für Küstenschiffahrt"
(Radio signals for coastal shipping) were each brought up to date
by means of 12 supplements. "Jachtfunkdienst Nord- und Ostsee"
(Radio signals for yachts in the North Sea und the Baltic) and
"Jachtfunkdienst Mittelmeer" (Radio signals for yachts in the
Mediterranean), together with the Table "Wetter- und Warnfunk"
(Weather and warning broadcasts), appeared as a special publica
tion for ships not compulsorily equipped with nautical documents.
3600 copies of "Nachrichten für Seefahrer" (Notices to Mariners)
with the supplements "Deckblätter zum Leuchtfeuerverzeichnis"
(Corrections to the List of Lights), "Nautische Warnnachrichten"
(Navigational warnings), "Liste der zeitweiligen Veränderungen
zum Leuchtfeuerverzeichnis" (Temporary corrections to the List
of Lights), "Liste der noch gültigen P- und T-Nachrichten" (List
of preliminary and temporary Notices still in force) as well as
"Liste der Berichtigungen Deutscher Seekarten" (List of corrected
German charts) were issued. Two booklets concerning the buoyage
system "A", Area 4 (1980) and a timetable for the changeover to
the new system were published as a unique special supplement.
The Bundesminister für Verkehr (Federal Minister of Transport)
gave the DHI the responsibility of revising the brochure "Sicher
heit in der Sportschiffahrt im Seebereich" (Safety of sports
craft in sea regions). Thanks are here extended to the numerous
captains and officers who supported thè DHI's work with nautical
reports.
In the cartography department, five further charts were drawn
automatically by means of the DHI's electronic data processing
equipment. The DHI also continued its work on international
charts in 1980. Of the 70 existing charts to scales 1 : 3.5 mil
lion and 1:10 million, 59 have hitherto been taken over by the
DHI, the DHI also produces two charts itself. The introduction
of the buoyage system "A" continued to cause a considerable
amount of work affecting 150 German charts, 97 of which had to
be published as "New Editions". The number of charts available
for hyperbolic navigation was increased with the appearance of
