Full text : 50 Fahrten des Forschungsschiffs "Meteor"

Fahrt Nr. / Cruise No. 25

Fahrtdauer / Cruise Period:
Fahrtleiter / Chief Scientist:

19/10/1971 — 14/12/1971
Prof. Dr. E. Seibold, GPI, Kiel

der Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratories, Miami/USA.

From Norway to the Equator the East Atlantic continental margin presents
an assortment of sediment and organisms of the open and protected shelf,
of the continental slope, and of the continental rise within various climatic
zones. Sediments and organisms yield insight into the most recent history
of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean margin. Investigations of the deeper subsoil
were to yield insight into the formation of this ocean. These questions
had already been, in part, objectives of earlier METEOR cruises (No. 8/1967
and No. 19/1970). Three standard profiles from the coast to the deep sea
with geophysical, morphological, geologic-sedimentological and micropaleontological
methods served for the investigation of the structure of
the uppermost horizons of the shelf, the continental slope and the continental
rise. These investigations were supplemented, on land, by studies
of profiles of interglacial sediments and of lagoons, in collaboration with
colleagues working there. Furthermore, the measurements served for the
connection to the eastern end of the Transatlantic Geophysical Traverse,
[rom Cape Hatteras to Cape Blanc, undertaken by the Atlantic Oceanographic
 and Meteorological Laboratories, Miami/USA.
