Mit dieser Fahrt wurden die mehrjährigen Untersuchungen zu dem inter- 
national koordinierten Programm CINECA (Co-operative Investigation of 
the Northern Part of the Eastern Central Atlantic) (vgl. Fahrten Nr. 19, 
26, 30, 36} abgeschlossen. 
Vor der nordwestafrikanischen Küste wurden die ozeanographischen, 
meereschemischen und biologischen Vorgänge beim Auftrieb nährstoff- 
reichen Wassers untersucht mit dem Ziel, die bisherigen Kenntnisse über 
das Ökosystem des küstennahen Auftriebs qualitativ und quantitativ zu 
verbessern. 
Auf dem Weg in das Auftriebsgebiet legte METEOR im Rahmen des inter- 
nationalen Experiments “POLYMODE East“ (Polygon Mid-Ocean Dynamics 
Experiment) zwei Strommesserketten im östlichen Atlantik für 6 Monate 
aus. 
This voyage was to complete the investigations within the international 
CINECA (Co-operative Investigation of the Northern Part of the Eastern 
Central Atlantic) Programme (cf. cruises No. 19, 26, 30, 36). 
Off the Northwest African coast the oceanographic, chemical and biological 
upwelling processes of nutrient-rich water were investigated with the pur- 
pose to improve — both qualitatively and quantitatively — the knowledge 
about the ecosystem of coastal upwelling. 
On the way to the upwelling area, METEOR laid out, for six months, two 
current meter arrays in the eastern Atlantic Ocean within the framework 
of the international experiment “POLYMODE (Polygon Mid-Ocean Dyna- 
mics Experiment) East“
