Allgemeines
des BSH vom Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde
errichtet worden. Mit den Vorbereitungen
zum Aufbau einer weiteren Station vor der
Odermündung wurde begonnen.
Erneut wurde die Zuverlässigkeit der im
BSH entwickelten Operationellen Drift-Simulationsmodelle
nachgewiesen.
zunehmend an Bedeutung. Durch ein neues Verfahren
können für Wattgebiete aus Satelliten-Aufnahmen
bei unterschiedlichen Gezeiten und
simulierten Wasserständen Höhenkarten abgeleitet
werden.
Die Vermessungs-, Wracksuch- und Forschungsschiffe
des BSH Gauß, Komet, Atair,
Wega, Deneb und Mercator/Bessel legten bei
ihren Arbeiten etwa 89 000 sm zurück. Im November
wurde das neue Vermessungs-, Wracksuch-
und Forschungsschiff Deneb mit Heimathafen
Rostock in Dienst gestellt.
Die Computeranlagen wurden der modernsten
Technik angepaßt (Lichtwellenleiter, Client-Server-Systeme).
Damit stehen für die Aufgaben
des BSH, insbesondere für Modellrechnungen
und das Deutsche Ozeanographische Datenzentrum
mit der Meeresumweltdatenbank, exzellente

forecasts on the stretches of the North and East
Frisian coasts where the bags would probably
drift ashore. The bags found there confirmed the
accuracy of the BSH simulation model.
Satellite remote sensing is gaining in importance.
A new method permits contour maps for
tidal flats to be derived from satellite pictures
taken at different tides and simulated water levels.
The BSH's survey, wreck search and research
vessels GauB, Komet, Atair, Wega, Deneb,
and Mercator/Bessel covered a distance of
some 89,000 nautical miles during their operations.
In November, the new survey, wreck search
and research vessel Deneb was commissioned,
whose port of registry is Rostock.
The computer facilities were modernized to
the most advanced technological standard (optical-fibre
cables, client server systems). The BSH
thus has excellent, state-of-the-art tools for its
varied tasks, especially for its modelling computations
and for the work of “Deutsches
Ozeanographisches Datenzentrum” (German
Oceanographic Data Centre) including the “Meeresumweltdatenbank”
(Marine environmental
data base). This modern technology enables the
BSH to cope with the growing demands on scientific
work.
Major organisational changes, especially
the merging of the departments “Safety of ship’s
technology” and “Tonnage measurement“ to a
new department “Shipping”, were carried out in
order to streamline the BSH's maritime functions
and create new priorities, also against the background
of financial restrictions.
