Underwater Noise Measurement Intercalibration Practices Experience
17
Looking forward, several priorities emerge. First, free-field calibration should
become a routine complement to pistonphone checks, at least at multiyear intervals.
Second, the Baltic Sea monitoring community benefits from a harmonized minimal
standard operating procedures that captures both calibration and deployment prac-
ice, drawing on the practical lessons learned during the workshop. Third, joint
workshops should be repeated on a regular basis, ideally every few years, to provide
updated intercomparisons and to address remaining uncertainties. Such follow-up
efforts will be crucial to ensure that regional assessments of underwater noise are
based on data that are robust, comparable, and transparent across institutions.
