Perfomance of the Vessel-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current
Profiler
A vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (VMADCP) was used for continuous re-
sording of single ping velocity data in the water column. The instrument is of type Teledyne
RD Instruments (TRDI) Ocean Surveyor (OS) operating at 150 kHz with a flat phased-array
transducer mounted in the hull of the ship. Since the VMADCP does not have any further built-
in sensors, additional data on heading and tilt were obtained from the ship's Hydrins system.
Data recording was carried out with the TRDI VmDas software, version 1.50.19. Characteristic
parameters of the device installed on RV ATAIR are listed in Table 7.2.
