Also, that on th** 1st day of September 
1869, the fixed light on Smith point, in 
Chesapeake bay, near the mouth of the Po 
tomac river, was changed to a revoking iwhite 
light, varied by a red flash once every ticenty-

Also, that on the above date, a light was 
exhibited from a screw-pile lighthouse in 12 
feet water, mean tale, on Rappahannock spit, 
off Windmill point, I’hesapeake bay. on north 
side of entrance to Rappahannock river. 
The light is a flied white light, 38 feet 
above the ordinary sea level, and in clear 
weather should be seen from a distance of 
13 miles. 
The iron work of the foundation of the 
lighthouse is painted red. and the superstruc 
ture straw colour; and from it Stingray point 
lighthouse bears S. W. by S. about 3 miles. 
During foggy weather a bell will be sounded 
by machinery every ten .second*. 
The light-vessel stationed at the south 
eastern extremity of Rappahanuock spit, off 
Windmill point, was removed on the exhi 
bition of the new light on Windmill point: 
hut a large black buoy, properly numbered, 
is now placed near the position formerly 
occupied by the light-vessel. 
Directions. Vessels drawing 18 feet 
water, or upwards, should not approach the 
lighthouse on the eastern side nearer than 
2 miles; but vessels under that draught may 
approach the lighthouse on its north or south 
side to half a mile; whilst those of not more
