beispielsweise die verlustfreie Speicherung aller
wichtigen Navigationsdaten und maßgeblichen
Maschinendaten sowie die Darstellung des
Radarbildes, das viermal pro Minute aufgezeichnet
wird. Eine gesonderte Datenschutzkapsel sorgt
dafür, dass die aufgezeichneten Daten der jeweils
letzten zwölf Stunden kontinuierlich mit den neuesten
Daten überschrieben werden. Selbst schwere
Schiffsidentifikationssystems AIS (Universal Shlp-
borne Automatic Identification System), mit dem -
data recorders has been mandatory for all ferries,
new passenger ships, and all new ships with a gross
tonnage of more than 3000 GT.
The type-approved VDR, made by a German and a
Swedish manufacturer, are among the first recover
able maritime voyage data recorders worldwide
meeting the severe requirements which so far had
been known only in aviation. However, In their techni
cal specifications, they are far superior to the latter.
The maritime Black Box stores a much larger variety
of data than the black boxes used In aviation. It
houses not only the usual voice recorder but guaran
tees loss-free storage of all important navigational
and engine data and records the radar display four
times a minute. Safely stored in a protective capsule,
the data records from the last 12 hours are continu
ously overwritten with latest data. The units must be
capable of withstanding heavy collisions, fires, and
pressure conditions In several thousand metres of
water without loss of data.
It can be predicted already today that the Black Box
will play an important role as a reliable data source in
the reconstruction of marine casualties. It will help to
avoid past mistakes and increase the safety of navi
gation in general.
AIS system to be launched
Preparations for the international Introduction of the
novel Universal Shipborne Automatic Identification
System (AIS) are running at full steam at the BSH. All
new ships must be equipped with this system from
July 2002. AIS enables voyage data to be exchanged
in real time among ships fitted with this Intelligent
system. The novel type of ship-to-ship communica
tion made possible by AIS no longer has anything in
common with the radio calls of traditional radio com
munications systems. AIS Is a new dimension In navi
gation: ships will have “eyes“! Quicker and more
