lassen kann, liefern unsere vier Vermessungsschiffe,
die zu den modernsten weltweit zählen, regelmäßig
neue Informationen über die nautisch bedeutsamen
Veränderungen In Nord- und Ostsee. Das Vermes
sungsgebiet des BSH umfasst eine Fläche von etwa
57 000 km 2 , was einem Sechstel der Landfläche
Deutschlands entspricht. Weil sich die Tiefenverhält

wasserhindernissen durch Strömungen und Sedl-
To ensure absolute reliability of the topographic and
hydrographic data in the BSH charts, our four survey
vessels - equipped with latest state-of-the-art survey
technology - routinely provide updates on changes
in the North and Baltic Seas which are relevant to
navigational safety. The BSH's survey area covers
some 57,000 km2, which corresponds to one sixth of
the German territory. As depth conditions In the fair
ways and the positions of underwater obstructions
are continually changing due to currents and sedi
ment transports, the BSH's survey schedule provides
for systematic re-surveying at intervals ranging from
1 to 30 years, depending on local conditions. A new
survey vessel for the BSH fleet, designed especially
for shallow, near-shore waters, will be added to the
BSH fleet in autumn 2003.
Existing deficits in hydrographic surveying pose con
siderable risks to shipping. Worldwide, nearly half of
all coastal waters have not been adequately survey
ed. In many parts of the world, the last surveys have
