lassungen für das AlS-Schiffsidentifikationssystem, 
werden auch erstmals Geräte der geplanten AIS- 
Class B für die Sportschifffahrt erprobt. 
Meeresumweltschutz: Allein mit dem Forschungs 
schiff GAUSS werden 15 Expeditionen durchgeführt, 
um Nord- und Ostsee auf Temperatur, Salzgehalt und 
Strömungen sowie auf Belastungen mit Schad- und 
Nährstoffen zu untersuchen. Ferner sollen die BSH- 
Überwachungsprogramme an neue EU-Anforderun- 
gen angepasst und die Vorhersagemodelle weiter 
optimiert werden. Außerdem beteiligt sich das BSH 
mit Tlefseedrlftern Im Nordatlantik an dem Internatio 
nalen Ozean-Beobachtungsprogramm ARGO, das 
Daten über Klimaveränderungen liefern soll. 
Navigational and radiocommunications equipment: 
as the trend toward Integrated navigation systems 
continues, the BSH's testing laboratory will expand 
its activities In this sector. Apart from granting 
approvals for AIS ship identification systems It will 
also, for the first time, test prototypes of the planned 
AIS class B for recreational boating. 
Marine environmental protection: the research vessel 
GAUSS alone will carry out 15 cruises to monitor 
temperatures, salinity, and currents in the North Sea 
and Baltic Sea and analyse pollutant and nutrient 
loads. The BSH's monitoring programmes will be 
adjusted to new EU requirements, and its prognostic 
models will be optimised further. Besides, the BSH 
will deploy deep-sea drifting buoys In the North 
Atlantic Ocean as a contribution to the International 
ocean observing programme ARGO, which Is to pro 
vide data oncllmate change.
