BSH - provider of maritime services
The BSH is the Federal maritime authority providing services in the fields of
navigation and maritime transport as well as the marine environment. Its
headquarters are In Hamburg and Rostock. With its 840 dedicated employees
offering a wide range of skills and expertise and Its annual budget of
some 62 million Euro, It Is well positioned as a provider of the following services:
• Promotion of the German merchant fleet
• Tonnage measurement and law of the flag
• Issue and registration of mariners’ certificates
• Type-testing and approval of navigation and radiocommunications
equipment
• Maritime security
• Issue of official navigational charts and nautical publications for
commercial and small-craft shipping
• Surveys In the North Sea and Baltic Sea
• Prediction of tides, water levels, and storm surges
• Monitoring of the marine environment
• Prosecution of environmental offences
• Marine spatial planning
• Approval of offshore activities, e.g. wind farms, pipelines, submarine cables
The BSH has Its historical roots In the “Norddeutsche Seewarte” (North German
Maritime Observatory) which prepared detailed sailing directions based on
nautical and meteorological observations as early as 1868. In 1875, It was
succeeded by the “Deutsche Seewarte” (German Maritime Observatory), which
became the “Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut” (German Hydrographic
Institute) In 1945, and BSH in 1990. After the reunification of Germany, the
BSH took over functions from maritime institutions of the former GDR. The BSH
operates six vessels for hydrographic surveys, wreck search, and research,
which are among the most technically advanced vessels of this type worldwide.
