BSH kompakt
27
and fundamentals of com
mercial and scientific use,
requirements for the safety
and efficiency of navigation,
and for the protection of the
marine environment
• The BSH started developing
a central geospatial data
Infrastructure, which will
become part of a compre
hensive national geospatial
data base
• Revision of CONTIS (Con
tinental Shelf Information
Service) chart service
• Restructuring of the marine
data, Information, and analy
sis system (MEDIAN)
• The development of a nauti
cal-hydrographic Information
system (NAUTHIS)was
continued
• Development of a geological
data Information system as
part of the “Shelf Geology
Explorer” project
which means they are in need of protection. Activities such as deep sea
mining, marine biotechnology, and energy production at sea, with wind farms
marking just the beginning of future developments, have sparked a broad
public debate on sustainable use of the seas and oceans.
In order to co-ordinate the different uses while protecting features of
conservation interest, a sustainable, integrated spatial management based on
a sound geospatial data base is indispensable. Both marine spatial planning
and the measurement, recording, and evaluation of marine data are core tasks
of the BSH. Up to now, most geospatial data come from separate data sources
which are not linked. In future, it will be necessary to provide easy, standardised
access to marine geospatial data to all who need such data. This topic has
been gaining in importance also at the international level.

UMWELTBEWUSST
