In a joint project called “Geopotenzial Deutsche
Nordsee”, the first draft maps of seabed sediment
distribution have been developed in cooperation
with the Federal Institute for Geosciences
and Natural Resources (BGR) and the
State Agency for Mining, Energy and Geology
(LBEG). The maps will be supplemented and updated
with latest sampling data collected during
cruises of the BSH’s research vessels. Available
seismic data have been completely digitised.
Parts of the data have been processed jointly
with BGR and have been prepared for state-ofthe-art
mapping of the upper sea floor layers in
compliance with high quality standards. Institute
for Baltic Sea Research (IOW) completed the
last sheet of the Baltic Sea map of sediment
distribution, which shows sediments in the Kiel
Bight. This marks the end of seagoing work for
this project launched in 1994 as part of the administrative
  agreement. The harmonised dataset
will be included in the “Shelf Geo-Explorer” by
late 2011 and will then be available to the public
via GeoSeaPortal.
