Example 6:
What are the times of low water and of the following high water at 54° 10’ N, 8° 00’ E on 16 September 2015 in the morning,
and what is the tidal rise value (TS)?
The times of spring, mean, and neap tides are given in Part III, Table 2, page 203.
According to Table 2, it is spring tide. Therefore, the spring tide values in the table of tidal differences (Part II) are used in
the computation.
6.1 Computation of low and high water times
Use the Charts “Linien gleichen mittleren Zeitunterschiedes gegen den Durchgang des Mondes durch den Nullmeridan”
(charts showing line of equal mean time difference against meridan transit of the moon) for this computation.
The closest reference station in charts 1 and 2 in the Table is Helgoland. Take the mean time differences from the relevant
Table and charts, page 212, 213.

The time differences between the example location and Helgoland are:
LW time: 5h05min- 4h 55min = Oh 10min
HW time: 10 h 42 min - 10 h 35 min = 0 h 07 min
The predictions for the example location are derived from the computed time differences and predictions for Helgoland:

6.2 Computation of tidal rise
Use the Cart “Linien gleichen mittleren Springtidenhubs” (charts showing lines of equal mean spring range.)
Take the mean spring range (MSR) from the relevant Table and chart.

The tidal rise at Helgoland this night is:
TS: 3.2m - 0.6m = 2.6m
The ration of tidal rise and mean spring range at Helgoland this night is:
2.6m/2.70m = 0.96
The tidal rise at 54° 10’ N 8° 00’ E on this night is:
TS: 2.8m ■ 0.96 = 2.69m, rounded to: 2.7 m
The times of low and high water, and the tidal rise, in the night of 16 September 2015 are:
54° 10’ N 8° 00’ E LW time 08 11 (UTC + 1 h OOmin)
HW time 13 45 (UTC + 1 h OOmin)
TS 2.7 m
