Introduction
Towards the end of the year 2013, the severe storms
Christian and Xaver crossed northern Europe in short
temporal sequence, causing destruction and disrupting
travel. Due to high wind speeds trees were toppled and
buildings damaged. Power outages were reported.
Shipping, rail, and air traffic shut down temporarily. Xaver
caused several consecutive storm surges in the German
Bight region. On the islands, dunes and sand were eroded.
Hallig lowlands were flooded (German: „landunter"). At
the research platforms in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea,
FINOl, 2 and 3, very high wind speeds and turbulence
intensities were measured providing new insights about
the required load of offshore wind energy platforms.
Development of the Storms
Storm Christian formed on 26 th October 2013 over the
Western Atlantic as a secondary depression of the lowpressure
system Burkhard. On its way eastward, the remnants
of an ex-tropical storm provided an additional input
of energy. With a forward speed of 1200 km in 12 hours,
Christian was classified as a "rapid moving low" [DWD

Einleitung
Gegen Ende des Jahres 2013 überquerten in kurzer Folge
die Orkantiefs Christian und Xaver Nordeuropa. Sie sorgten
für Verwüstungen und Verkehrschaos. Aufgrund der
hohen Windgeschwindigkeiten kippten Bäume um und
Häuser wurden beschädigt. Es kam zu Stromausfällen, zeitweise
wurde der Schiffs-, Zug- und Flugverkehr eingestellt.
Während Xaver traten im Bereich der Deutschen Bucht
mehrere aufeinanderfolgende Sturmfluten auf. Auf den
Inseln gab es Dünenabbrüche und Sandabtragungen, für
die Hallig-Bewohner hieß es „landunter". An den Forschungsplattformen
in der Nord- und Ostsee, FINOl, 2 und
3, wurden sehr hohe Windgeschwindigkeiten und Turbulenzintensitäten
gemessen, die neue Erkenntnisse über die
notwendigen Auslegerparameter von Offshore-Windkraftanlagen
  liefern.
Entwicklung der Stürme
Das Orkantief Christian entstand am 26. Oktober 2013 als
Randtief aus dem Tiefdruckkomplex Burkhard über dem
Westatlantik. Auf seinem Weg nach Osten sorgten u.a. die
Reste eines ehemaligen tropischen Wirbelsturms für eine
