upwelling water off the Northwest African coast — which belongs to the most
richly populated fishing places in the world — the internationally co-ordinated
long term CINECA*) Programme was concluded with oceanographical, marine
chemical, and biological investigations. The geological and geophy
sical research work (magnetism, gravimetry, and seismology) was
concentrated upon the area around Iceland, the region of the Azores, and the
Northwest African continental margin; they served — amongst other things —
for the preparation of, and supplement to, the world-wide drilling programme
IPOD (International Phase of Ocean Drilling) in which the Federal Republic of
Germany is participating. The work in summer 1977 was concerned with the
structure of the Earth's crust in the region of the Reykjanes Ridge and off the
Norwegian coast; in autumn, on the Northwest African continental margin, geo-
scientific investigations concerning the genesis of the Atlantic Ocean were
continued.
Besides its routine task of collecting, preparing, and supplying German oceano
graphic data, the Deutsches Ozeanographisches Datenzentrum
— which is attached to the DHI for organizational reasons — took part in the
data processing for international joint experiments, e. g, FLEX '76, IGOSS**)
Marine Pollution (Petroleum) Monitoring Pilot Project.
In both 1976 and 1977, at 23 positions in the German Bight and at 18 stations in
the western Baltic Sea, samples of water, suspended matter, and the bottom
were taken and investigated for their content of various groups of noxi
ous substances. In accordance with legal duties ***) the DHI makes deci
sions concerning applications for permission to dump wastes and monitors the
compliance with the internationally determined conditions for same. The DHI
participates intensively in the international efforts against pollution of the seas;
for example, in Working Groups of the International Council for the Explora
tion of the Sea (ICES) and the Inter-Governmental Oceanographic Commission
(IOC), as well as within the framework of the Helsinki Convention.
In autumn 1976, the DHI took part in an Aircraft Remote Sensing
Programme sponsored by the BMFT****), by which the German Bight was
investigated to see in how far oceanographical parameters — such as surface
temperature, wave movement, chemical pollution, content of suspended matter
in the water, etc. — could be measured by remote sensing. The ground truth
measurements necessary therefor were carried out on board SRV "Gauß".
The charts of the North Sea surface temperature, which — with the support of
the German Scientific Commission for Marine Research — are issued weekly,
received increasing interest. In addition to the automatic permanent mea
surement station, which has been in existence for years at Kiel Light
