Jahresbericht Nr.13/1958

Precision time signals are transmitted by the G.H.I. - after additional
transmitters were included - now daily 24 times in summer and 26 times in
winter.
She number Of ship's chronometers tested rose again in the year under
review. Shipping greatly availed itself again of the possibility of hiring
ship^s chronometers.
In the field of nautioal engineering it is to be recorded that in April
1958 type-testings in navigational respect were commenced of radio position
fixing equipments aboard as prescribed by the Regulations concerning the
safety of ships navigated by radio aids. So far round 450.radio direction
finders and radar sets on more than 300 ships have undergone this test. '
She determination of minimum distances from the magnetic ship's compasses
of instruments, serving navigation on radio aids, found to an increasing
extent the interest of the instrument-makers, whereby single firms had
repeatedly measurements done in order to eliminate, by alterations of
their instruments, as far as possible any disturbances on the magnetic
compass. Based oh extensive measurements in the laboratory of the compen
sating effect of Flinders bars of various diameters and up to 1,20 m in
length, the data serving for an invariant adjustment with respect to
latitude could be augmented for extreme cases as they could be observed
of late in new ships.
After the "Verordnung über Positionslaternen" (Regulations : on Position-
lights) had become effective on 1 August 1958, the G.H.I. has issued the
new "Zulassungsbedingungen für Positionslaternen" (Regulations concerning
the admittance of position-lights).
Especially for use in "Gauss." during the: I.G.Ï. cruises a new type of
deep-sea echo sounding machine was bought. The means for this purchase
came in part from a special fund. The recorder works with a. sonic frequency
of 12 Ke/s which is generated by a valve generator. Special attention was
dedicated to the check on the constant speed of the driving motor which in
the first instance is responsible for the accuracy of the stylus; the
accuracy could be improved by more than one Order of magnitude. The echo
sounding machine has worked well.
The public -services of the G.H.I. such as the Navigational Warning
Service, the Storm-Surge Warning Service as well as the Ice Service
were continued in the usual way.
The G.H.I. was represented at the Fifth Meeting of the Special Committee
for the International Geophysical Year (CSAGI) in Moscow'as well as at the
meetings of the International Advisory Committee on Marine Sciences (IACQMS),
of the Special Committee on Oceanic Research (SCÖR), and at that of the
International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) in Copenhagen.
