„The method invented by the late Mr. Lyons was printed in the first
edition of the tables published by order of the Commissioners of Longitude, ?)
with particular tables constructed by the same gentleman, for computing the
effects of refraction; but it must be confessed these are very complicated in
their use and application: it therefore occurred to me, that if this correction
could be obtained at once, without reference to his various tables, the remaining
part of the calculation for the effect of the Moon’s parallax being made with
the assistance of such tables only as are common in all books on Navigation,
his method would be rendered one of the easiest that have been employed to
correct the lunar distances. With this intention, I turned ıny mind to the
subject, and after due consideration, arranged the plan of a set of tables,
which by a certain combination of lines, would immediately give the required
correction to a degree of accuracy sufficient for all nautical purposes. These
tables I have with great care and assiduity calculated, drawn and superintended
the engraving of, and now present them to my seafaring countrymen, trusting,
that by simplifying the operation, they will tend to render more general the
practise of ascertaining the Longitude by Lunar Observations. Naval Academy,
Leadenhall Street. J. W. N.“
% P? cos ?H sin ?M cotg D = !%% (P? cos °H — P? cos ?H cos ’M) cotg D
unter dem Titel: „Second edition of longitude tables for correcting the
distance of the Sun and Moon, or the Moon and a Star for the effects of
parallax and refraction, whereby lunar observations are greatly shortened and
rendered practical and easy to the navigator.“ Improved by James M, Elford

”-) Norie bezieht sich hier ohne Zweifel auf die erste Ausgabe der „Tables requisite to be
used with the Nautical Ephemeris‘“, Publ. by order of the Commissioners of Longitude, London 1767,
Plan verbunden,
